Notes on the AU, general post and bits about Echidna.
AU Background: In the land of Tabletopstuck is basically your average human world, where Homestuck, sburb and sgrub are an extremely elaborate tabletop homebrew invented by Richard, the older brother of Raiden, the equivalent of Dave. Richard-- also known as Dick or "Lord English," as he's called when DMing-- is a master DM and tested out his homebrew with his group of twelve friends, the AU equivalent of the trolls. It began when he introduced the troll society and crafted Alternia, and they played through the story of the troll ancestors basically as a DnD campaign.
Ask anyone though and they will tell you that Dick is the harshest DM ever, because eventually all of the characters were killed except for Anna's (AU!Aradia's) Handmaiden, and Felicity's (AU!Feferi's) Condesce, and so they rolled new characaters and began a new Alternian campaign. On a weekend soon after, Dick finally caved to his younger brother and agreed to DM a campaign for him and some friends using the sgrub homebrew; but since the troll group had messed things up so royally, he took the troll society out of the campaign and had the four players make normal humans, and renamed it sburb for convenience. And so Amadeus, Briar, Raiden and Echidna got together and created the characters of John Egbert, Rose Lalonde, Dave Strider and Jade Harley.
As for Echidna herself, she was adopted at an early age by a pair of eccentric science types who were in the upper middle class as far as income goes. She remained in contact however, with her equally eccentric biological grandpa and grandma, though she has no idea if they're her paternal or maternal grandparents. Much of her childhood was spent with said grandparents, her grandma being one of those old feminists that took part in the protests and her grandpa a millionare of unknown fortune, who enjoyed hunting and insisted his granddaughter learn how to shoot a gun. Since she didn't have many friends her age growing up, she spent a lot of free time with her parents and her grandparents. She learned how to play tabletop one weekend when her uncle came to visit, and everyone was stuck in the house due to some freak snowstorm.
She was homeschooled basically all of her life until she went to University, where she's currently doublemajoring in nuclear physics and neurobiology, with a minor in chemistry. Though she was homeschooled, she was taking classes at the local college since she was high school age, and she attends college with a full scholarship. It was in her biology classes that she met Sam (AU!Sollux) and learned about the sgrub homebrew. Sam's bragging and complaining gave her foreknowledge about a few mechanics about the campaign, allowing her to mess around with Dick's plot and give Jade her meta reputation. As part of some weird cross-campaign idea, Dick started intermixing elements from the troll players' new campaign and the kid players' campaign, using some silly character log IM thing to have the tabletop characters interact with each other and progress thes tory.
After Raiden used Dave's time powers to travel back in time and create Davesprite, the group basically had Raiden distract Dick so that Amadeus could get John to god tier, Briar could get Rose's grimdark powers, and Echidna could prototype her dreamself and become a physical god in the game, as well as setting it up for Dave and Rose to get god tier after hearing from Anna how she was able to get Aradia to god tier.
At that point Dick ragequit and forced the kids' players to roll new character sheets, arguing that because of Jack Noir destroyed the Genesis Frog in the troll campaign (which was previously established as hosting the kid's universe) that the kid's universe was now destroyed and thus he temporarily suspended their character sheets. The four were rather upset. As well as being friends with Sam, Echidna-- the most sociable between Amadeus, Briar and Raiden-- is also friends with Teresa(AU!Terezi), Tammy (AU!Tavros), and Nina (AU!Nepeta), with whom she plays World of Darkness. She is also vaguely friends with Ed (AU! Equius) and Victor (AU!Vriska), who play WoD with them, as well as Karl (AU!Karkat), and Kan (AU!Kanaya).
Echidna was diagnosed with asthma as a kid and it annoyingly persists to be a thing, and while she tries not to overexert herself, she doesn't really seem bothered by it. She also has awful eyesight without her glasses, and never got braces as a kid; which thankfully just resulted in some buck teeth. She is blissfully free of her canon counterpart's narcoleptic issues, but also lacks the precognitive abilities as well.
Personality: Echidna is a quirky and cheerful girl; according to Amadeus she can be very loud and is blindingly optimistic. Being homeschooled and raised with mostly old people a dog, she doesn't have much understanding of normal teenage/young adult social conventions (considering the fact that she regularly sneaks into Raiden's house like a "ninja warrior!!!!" although she does ask his permission), and so most of the time she ends up acting like a dorky and derpy five year old. She's incredibly enthusiastic and excitable, and the most progressive and socially active of her tabletop group. Her excitability can lead to her being a bit impulsive, as she gets very excited about ideas that are "cool" and "awesome," but coupled with this is a determination to make sure things happen.
She's one of those people that will talk to you like you're already good friends, and because of this and her cheerfulness, even if she's not very socially graceful, she makes friends easily (at least in her view) and grows very close to them. She thinks of all three of her tabletop friends as brothers, particularly looking up to Briar, getting into silliness with Amadeus, and still thinking Raiden is "soooo cool!!" She absolutely loves having Sam as a study buddy even though he can be a "meanie face!!!" and is on good terms with Teresa and Tammy. Although she has no clue who her biological parents are, she doesn't even seem to really care; she adores her family, being especially close to her grandpa. An outsider might view Echidna as spoiled, as her wealthy grandparents have spent a copious amount of money on her, as well as her parents, to the point where she doesn't have to get a job or student loans for college. She is eternally grateful, though it's true that she probably wouldn't be too keen on having to get a job.
Echidna's a tad bit more adventurous, risky and ridiculous than her canon counterpart, traits which are channeled into her second character, Jake English. She absolutely loves meta jokes and breaking the fourth wall, metagaming herself during campaigns and loving things like Metal Gear Solid and Discworld (introduced to her by Raiden and Briar respectively). She's started playing World of Darkness with Teresa, but she vastly prefers D&D because she likes the nooks and crannies of it all.
Despite being undoubtedly derpy, Echidna is darn near prodigious when it comes to academics. She's been homeschooled by her scientist parents and is a natural learner, able to retain a lot of things very easily, so she hardly ever needs to study. In addition to being ABLE to learn things easily, she absolute LOVES learning new things; her favorite subjects being physics and astronomy. She's also taken an engineering class or two, as she loves taking things apart to see how they work, and can usually put it back together, though will often derp on what went where. She once dreamed of going to space and being an astronaut, but that dream was dashed by her horrible eyesight and asthma. Nevertheless she still dreams it, and doesn't let her own limitations get her down too much.
Cheery as she can be, and while she does have plenty of patience, if you push her far enough she WILL get angry and will probably give you a good verbal bitchsmacking. She really wants to be helpful to people (especially considering all the bad stuff she's heard about the troll campaign), but worries about annoying them (especially since the troll players are very loud, angry people). She's awfully gullible sometimes though, coupled with being a tad naive and oblivious.
Most of her friends being boys (and actually being around them in real life), Echidna is a tad more rough than her canon counterpart. Although she's not fancy on physical fighting, she's not a total peaceful pacifist. Especially during their gaming sessions she can get particularly heated, once declaring bloodthirsty war on Dick and Jack Noir when she got tricked into having to prototype the kernelsprite with Becquerel. She can be a fair bit more feisty as well, and will often come up with ridiculous ideas for escapades that people don't usually take seriously, while she does; like her plan to sneak into Dick's room and steal a smuppet for a bonfire. She's much more mischievous and often wants to do dumb things for no particular reason, although she rarely does any of this with malicious intent. She's not very dismissive and will take most things seriously, but after awhile when she sees it's ridiculous, she will start to sass back.
Her memory is quite a bit better as well; in fact that's probably an understatement, as she's able to retain a lot of facts (a good bit of them useless, but nevertheless) and doesn't even have to resort to buffy speak; although she doesn't like to use them in normal conversation since she knows no one will understand her. She tries to avoid "Buffy Speak," though, and attempts to explain what things are more clearly, although that can easily get into her explaining the theory of radioactive decay before something makes sense. Although she's very fond of floral patterns, she doesn't care much for gardening or the furry fandom or things like that; in fact she gave Jade those interests more to just mess around and because she thought it was funny. She likes technology and things far more, and she oddly enough enjoys reading textbooks for fun instead of trying to mess with plants. She's far more knowledgeable about geek and pop culture and especially DnD, and can geek out about it at the drop of a hat. If she's presented with ridiculous shenanigans (even silly time-warp shit), she'd fully embrace it and think it's hilariously entertaining instead of trying to make it more orderly.
Unlike Jade, who grew up knowing about her dead dream self and had her stuffed grandfather around the house, Echidna doesn't have much of a concept of death and loss even at her age. It's hard for her to imagine any world where she doesn't have her parents or her grandparents around, and she isn't aware of the fact that any of her friends would ever be out of her life or could possibly leave it. She can also be childish and throw tantrums when something's going on, and rather than just getting angry, she'll steam and pout instead, holding a bit of a grudge. While she can hold it for awhile, she can get over it with just a little time and reconciliation.
Abilities: Echidna, again, is a natural learner and is able to retain facts, formulas, and things like that very easily; whenever she has study sessions with Sam, it usually consists of her going over things real quick and then bothering him, while helping him study what HE needs to. On the flip side, while she is a prodigy at hard sciences and pretty good at math, she is absolutely horrible at soft sciences and liberal arts. She can't draw very well and isn't good at social sciences like anthropology, philosophy or psychology (though she knows the brain chemistry parts). Even though she's playing World of Darkness, she's rather bad at the narrative-heavy style of it, though she's doing her best to learn with varying levels of success. The "creative" thing she's best at is playing the electric bass, which she was only able to finally figure out after pretending it was science.
She's pretty good at shooting firearms, though not as skilled as her canon counterpart due to not having the need for such skills--mostly she just shoots for fun at the shooting range with her grandpa, and her aim isn't even that superb anyway. She also dabbles in gadgetry (and would so have that as a major if it existed), but she has less success putting things back together (for example she can't seem to figure out how to put her iPad back together but oh well, she wasn't using it much anyway.)
Although not to the level of Raiden's God-of-D&D-ness, she is also pretty good at tabletop games, and fancy herself a ninja in her skill of sneaking into houses and climbing up trees, although she's probably exaggerating on those fronts.
Sample Entry:Dear_Mun and silly musebox.
